First, we welcome your success stories for submission. We hope our members will
send in stories about your interventions with individuals with dementia that
especially touched your heart. Sometimes our work can get overwhelming as we
try to meet the many “requirements” of our “job”. So I encourage all of us to
take a moment to share a successful moment that your skills and heart helped to
create.
All submissions should be written in 12 font and be one page or less. Also,
please use first names only when referring to your client.
A New Perspective Creates Positive Results
Submitted by: Sarah Bryant, MS CCC-SLP
Dear Kim,
I had the pleasure of attending the seminar last week in Natick and just wanted to let you know how much I
enjoyed it and how inspirational the material was. Leaving the seminar, I couldn't wait to use these
approaches in my own facility, which has a large AD unit. Yesterday, a woman was referred to me who was
described by one of her nurses as "she does nothing." By using the techniques I learned in your seminar,
I was able to engage her in a snack activity, paying attention to her nonverbal communicatioin. She was
smiling, holding a cup, holding a cookie (even though she is classified as a "feed") said "yes" and
had some other vocalizations. When I was done with my eval, a nurse on the unit came up to me
and said that she had never seen this patient smile like that before and be so engaged in an
activity. I was floored that all this woman needed to communicate and participate in her meals
was a different perspective on someone who was described as "she does nothing". I later shared
with that nurse that she, in fact, does a lot!
I have recommended your course to all of my colleagues, and hope that you will be visiting the Boston area again soon so that they may attend. Please let me know if Dementia Care Specialists are hosting additional seminars, as I am very interested!
Thank you so much,
Sarah Bryant, MS CCC-SLP
